Ask HN: Can you please add transcription to vocal messages in messaging apps?

I know that there are employees of big tech companies lurking around here. I have a feature request. Can you please add the ability to see the transcript of a vocal message on messaging apps like Teams, Signal, Telegram, Messenger, Discord, Slack, Whatsapp, etc? I know that live transcription is already a thing so it must be feasible, right? This feature would be super useful to see what was said without having to playback a bunch of vocal messages. I had the idea of doing this myself a long time ago but I basically needed to recreate the entire messaging infrastructure just to add this feature. So I donate the idea here.

New top story on Hacker News: Ask HN: What's the fastest way to become employable in tech

Ask HN: What's the fastest way to become employable in tech

Hello HN, I have quite a few friends who didn't study CS and don't know anything about programming but they hate their fields and want to switch. What's the best book, course, etc. that can take someone from zero knowledge to somewhat employable in tech? Employable is a vague term but when I think about most online college courses I imagine they teach more theory than practical skills used in most tech jobs to me. I'd imagine learning web development is probably the fastest track to becoming employable today but I'm curious what your recommendations are for how to learn that in the fastest way.

New top story on Hacker News: Show HN: OtterTune – Automated Database Tuning Service for RDS MySQL/Postgres

Show HN: OtterTune – Automated Database Tuning Service for RDS MySQL/Postgres

Yo. OtterTune is a database optimization service. It uses machine learning to automatically tune your MySQL and Postgres configuration (i.e., RDS parameter groups) to improve performance and reduce costs. It does this by only looking at your database's runtime metrics (e.g., INNODB_METRICS, pg_stat_database, CloudWatch). We don't need to examine sensitive queries or user tables. We spun this project out of my research group at Carnegie Mellon University in 2020. This week we've announced that OtterTune is now available to the public. We are offering everyone a starter account to try it out on their Postgres RDS or MySQL RDS databases (all versions, AWS US AZs only). We have seen OtterTune achieve 2-4x performance improvements and 50% cost reductions for these databases compared to using Amazon's default RDS configuration. I am happy to answer any questions that you may have about how OtterTune works here. -- Andy ================ More Info: * 5min Demo Video: https://ift.tt/3uoRmNP * Free Account Sign-up: https://ift.tt/3BHygqI
